20 September 2001: Balham, Lessons & Prayers
Amazing. It never fails. Theologians have a name for the way scripture always speaks to our daily situation. From the appointed lessons and prayers for this morning:
"Thus says God, who created the nations, who fashioned the earth and all that dwells in it. 'I am the Lord and I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you . . .
"The sound of violence shall be heard no longer in your land, or ruin and devastation within your borders . . . But the Lord will be your everlasting light."
"O God, the author of peace and lover of concord . . . defend us your servants from all assaults of our enemies . . ."
Walking along Balham High Street, we see flags pasted in the shop windows, "To show solidarity with U.S."
And then, at evening Eucharist, the International Prayer for Peace, prayed daily by Mother Theresa:
Lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth.
Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust.
Lead us from hate to love, from war to peace,
Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. Amen.
