The Holy Longing for Sacred Places: Pilgrimage in England, Scotland and Wales

In a context of national and international turmoil and danger, when peace is in short supply, it's not too surprising that record numbers of people are booking themselves into monasteries, convents and the like for short-term spiritual retreats. Not to be left out, Donna Fletcher Crow, our Wesleyan-Anglican Anglophile-in-Residence, is off to the United Kingdom for that very purpose, but with a difference: she's particularly visiting places where the holy lives and holy deeds of the few changed their tumultuous times for the better, for the benefit of everyone. Forethoughts
"Aren't you scared?" the little blond teller asked as she handed me my check in British pounds.
"I'm always scared." We all laughed. Everyone needed an excuse to laugh. It was three days after the World Trade Center tragedy. But even in relatively calmer times going down that jetway for an inter-continental journey always felt like going off the high diving board.
